Assisi Narratives

intersecting realities

These works continue my interest in juxtaposing apparent dualisms. Containing details of photographs that I took in Assisi during an artist residency, they consist of nine squares which form a grid pattern of alternating subject matter.  For example,  in the grid to the right, the black images are fragments of photographs that I took of iron grates on the windows of historic buildings in Assisi, and the white squares are images of the linen material that I used to recreate a 13th century liturgical garment.  The dense, hard, structural material of the iron grates is juxtaposed with the amorphous, soft, flowing material of the white linen.

A further example is the last image for which I gave the ironic title of "Sacred Commerce."   It juxtaposes the frescoed images of saints found in the Basilica of St Francis with images of commericial products which lined the streets of Assisi.
